Henrik Lindman, Head of the Department for Hematology and Oncology, and Mef Nilbert, the government’s special investigator for updating the national cancer strategy and expert at the National Board of Health and Welfare, were also present.

The purpose of the kickoff was not only to disseminate information about UCCC but also to offer participants insightful lectures on cancer care and research. Over 300 attendees registered.

"We have worked for many years to develop Uppsala Comprehensive Cancer Centre. Along the way, we have learned a lot while continuing to advance both cancer care and research. Now, we are aiming to become an accredited centre to demonstrate, both to ourselves and to our patients, that we are in the process of attaining the same level as many other cancer centres in Europe," said Marianne van Rooijen, Hospital Director and Chair of UCCC’s Board, on opening the event.
Ingrid Glimelius, Center Manager of UCCC, talked about the upcoming inspection of UCCC. On October 15th and 16th, the hospital will be visited by representatives from the Organisation of European Cancer Institutes (OECI), who will assess whether UCCC should become an accredited cancer centre.

"Becoming an accredited cancer centre means maintaining our status in the national cancer care system. It also allows us to continue ongoing improvement measures in line with the future of cancer care. Cancer care requires collaboration throughout the process – many staff members are involved, and it demands a high standard of coordination," said Ingrid Glimelius.

Throughout the day, participants listened to lectures on cancer care and research and had the opportunity to explore a poster exhibition. Among the speakers was professor Mef Nilbert, Senior Consultant in Oncology at Skåne University Hospital and Professor at Lund University, who is also the government’s special investigator for updating the national cancer strategy and an expert at the National Board of Health and Welfare, tasked with coordinating Sweden’s efforts in the European collaboration on cancer. Professor Nilbert spoke about the process of inspecting a cancer centre and OECI’s vision for European cancer care. The day concluded with an award ceremony for the top three posters in various subject areas, the winners being Cecilia Olsson Ladjevardi (clinical research), Evelina Karlsson (preclinical research), and Rebecca Skog (improvement project).

"It has been a day packed with well-received lectures and great interest and engagement from the participants. It’s exciting to have the opportunity to share more about UCCC, which is a centre in which many staff members are involved in their daily work," said Ingrid Glimelius.
